Transport Industry

Driver/Supervisor

Martin Taueki

I commenced my apprenticeship in New Zealand when I left high school and completed my carpentry apprenticeship. I had a job offer from a friend who had moved to Sydney so I also moved to Australia.

The job fell through but I was able to find work with another home building company. That lasted about three months, during which time all my tools were stolen. From there I had various labouring jobs between Sydney and Townsville, after which I ended up back in Sydney where I then started work for TNT.

I started as a dock hand loading freight into trucks. From there I progressed to fork lift driver, then onto a truck driver, and then a semi trailer driver. I was then asked to become a supervisor. In this role I did various supervisory jobs and progressed into management. When I left TNT I had been promoted as far a Area Manager for Zone 1 that took in all suburbs of West/North West Sydney. I had the responsibility of 53 drivers and 3 supervisors who all reported to me.

Over the years the senior management changed and new ideas were introduced, but a lot of the ideas men left TNT to go into other transport companies. The latest senior managers had their own way of doing things and I found it increasingly difficult to get up for work in the morning.

For the last 18 months I have wanted to leave but was not able to find something I could really have a go at. I was offered work with another transport company but wanted to get right away from the transport game. My wife heard the Hire A Hubby advertisement on the radio and told me about it. We had a look at the website online for more information and downloaded the details of the seminar at Parramatta back in March.

That started the wheels in motion for me to exit TNT and the transport industry as I thought then and still believe now that this was the opportunity I was looking for.

Truck Driver/Pastry Cook
Wayne

My name is Wayne I own a Hire a Hubby franchise in regional NSW. I started in April 2005.

Previous jobs: Trade qualified Pastry Cook went on to manage new bakery for major supermarket. I got sick of being locked up inside so I brought a truck and started working with road works. I was looking for a change and saw the Hire A Hubby advertising in the local paper at just the right time. Being a believer in franchise systems I could see that they offered a lot more than what I could manage on my own and decided to give it a go.

The skills I have, I got from Tafe courses, books, magazines, home renos and just every day problem solving.

Working for myself gives me flexibility to work jobs around family (i.e.: Kids School events) and the great lifestyle it provides.
